Everywhere I go so many people are asking about the newest health trend Intermittent Fasting. They want to know if it’s true. Can you simply not eat and lose weight? Is it right for me? How can I start?
Before you decide if this is the diet for you, let me give you a few facts so that you can decide for yourself. I’ll start with the obvious. Intermittent Fasting is simply an eating pattern that rotates between fasting and eating. There are no specific foods you can eat, just defined time periods; so it’s really not a diet.
There are several intermittent fasting methods but I’m going to discuss the two I get asked about the most.
- The 16/8 Method: This is where you fast for 16 hours and eat during an 8 hours a day timeframe.
- Eat Stop Eat Method: This is where you fast for 24 hours a day once or twice a week.
Simple right? Before I go on, I just want to share a personal story. About 10 years ago, in my old life, my days would look like this: I would wake up in the morning, workout, get my kids ready for school, drop them off and go to work. I didn’t eat breakfast; I worked hard and didn’t have time for lunch. You know the saying, time flies when you’re having fun. So, before I knew it was time to pick up the kids and then I would eat. I would eat from around 3pm till the time I went to bed. I would go to bed and repeat. Is that intermittent fasting? I was eating about 8 hours a day and fasted 16 hours daily. I was also over 247 pounds.
Look, here is the deal, everything works if you work it but not everything is for everyone. If you are overweight or have had eating disorders, you really should shy away from this trend. When we skip meals our blood sugar drops and we can feel irritable, confused, fatigue and simply can’t think clearly. Our metabolism slows down and our bodies go into survival mode holding everything we consume.
We naturally have a fasting period, think about it. When we have consumed dinner, go to bed, and wake up we have been fasting all night. Once we eat breakfast, we break the fast. Every trend is not for everyone. Just remember when you are trying to lose weight you want to make sure you are boosting your metabolism by eating small meals every 3-4 hours.
Just to recap, Intermittent Fasting is not for everyone, but you make the decision if it is right for you, be honest with yourself. If you are already not eating for long periods of time and you’re overweight, you may want to leave this one to others.
